Fancy Color Grades in the API
The Munsell hue, value and chroma fields the API returns for a fancy colored diamond.
The API describes the color of a fancy colored diamond in Munsell notation. This page explains the three color fields, so that a client can read and show them.
Example
Munsell notation has the format H V/C, for example 7.5R 6/4 or 8.2BG 5.3/3.4.
Munsell notation
Munsell notation defines three attributes:
- Hue (H)
- Value (V)
- Chroma (C)
The Munsell system places 40 hues on a circle. Each hue is one of the five primary colors, or a mix of two neighboring primary colors. The primary colors are Red, Yellow, Green, Blue and Purple.
Fields
| Field | Format | Description |
|---|---|---|
HVC |
string | Exact Munsell coordinates. They can have fractional values. They give the exact position of the color between the tabular Munsell chips of the Munsell Book of Color. |
nearestHVC |
string | Munsell coordinates of the tabular chip closest to the exact HVC. |
hueAngleDeg |
float | Position of the hue on the Munsell circle, in degrees. 0 is the start of the 2.5R segment. The angle grows in the order Red → Yellow → Green → Blue → Purple. |
The diagrams below show exact Munsell coordinates and their nearest tabular chip.
