Live Comparison in DiBox JD

Fire and scintillation of two cuts side by side, and what size does to fire.

Cut and size change how a diamond shows fire: an Emerald gives bold but rare fire flashes, a Princess gives more scintillation, and a large round gives more fire than a small one.

Fire is the colored flashes in a diamond. Scintillation is flashes that are too fast for the eye to see their color. See Optical Performance Evaluation.

Emerald and Princess

These two diamonds, an Emerald and a Princess, show beauty in very different ways. The Emerald shows bold but rare fire flashes. The Princess gives less fire, but has high scintillation.

Large and small rounds

Compare the fire of two rounds side by side: a 6 mm round and a 2 mm round. The larger diamond clearly has more fire. Its fire flashes are about as large as the diameter of the smaller diamond.

Note also that the smaller diamond is brighter, even in Fire lighting.

In practice

  • The two cuts suit very different consumers. The Princess attracts younger people, who enjoy small but fast scintillating flashes. Mature buyers prefer the Emerald.
  • Fire is the unique selling point (USP) of large diamonds. Large diamonds are more valuable not only because they are rare, but also because only they can produce high fire. Smaller diamonds cannot reach it.
